The FP68T30 is currently the top line model in NEC's 68cm television range, supported as it is by other 68cm units, some smaller screen models and a larger 80cm set. It's a conventional looking set with clean straight lines and rectangular chassis that suits totally the large 4:3 aspect flat screen.

It's more or less parity priced with most large screen televisions, at least on a retail pricing level, and as such represents good value for money, particularly considering the type of performance you can expect from the unit and the range of features and facilities included.

NEC calls the screen of the FP68T30 a 'Pure Flat' tube design, to emphasise this design attribute. A flat screen is highly desirable because it is less susceptible to interference from reflections (though not immune, naturally), which in turn helps maintain picture quality under a wide variety of light conditions

The screen is this set is also a square design, actually what this refers to is the right angles at the four corners, because the screen is slightly rectangular. It means that you see more image for a given screen area when compared to conventional screens that have rounded corners.

The set is a multi-system unit (PAL, NTSC and SECAM) so there's maximum compatibility with material based on or around other television systems. A healthy compliment of connection facilities are featured, including three AV inputs, an AV output and two S-video inputs, the latter being your best option for better quality video connection than composite of RF options.

The sound system on board features stereo speakers and a 15 watt per channel amplifier powering them. The system works well as a basic audio solution until a full home theatre set-up can be acquired. There's enough power and the sound is adequately high in quality.

Set-up is a breeze and even novices will find the menu system and associated paper instructions. This is handled by the remote controller, which is a full function model that's relatively easy to navigate and use. The remote also handles all day to day functions (channel selection, power etc.) and quick picture adjustment. In all operations the on-screen menu and sundry information is clear, logically presented and easy to read at a distance.

The unit features a 100-channel tuner, but we will never use that many options. It's easy, however, to remove unused allocation though to clean up channel switching. Teletext is also included, which is useful as a captioning system, but I find it's slow to use as a general information medium.

Performance was very good indeed. Colour quality and balance was excellent, while resolution was on par with the best we've seen. This is a versatile television, happy with whatever source is thrown at it: DVD, broadcast or games. Basically if you give it a good signal, it'll do the job very nicely indeed.
