JBL's history stretches back several decades to the beginning of commercial and domestic sound entertainment systems. The company has been at the forefront of developments in both arenas since then.
JBL makes stylish high performance home theatre systems, of which subwoofers now play an integral part. The model PB12 is one of a new series of subwoofers designed for versatility in both sight and sound applications and incorporates a number of advanced technologies to help create theatre-quality sound.
The PB12 is apparently an extension of JBL's 'Pro Sound Comes Home' design philosophy, which aims to bring us the same level of sonic accuracy and emotional impact heard in the cinema and the recording studio. What's more the speaker is built to deliver low-frequency performance from both Dolby Digital and DTS sound formats - and compatibility with JBL home theatre speakers.
The PB12 comes from the PowerBass Series which also features the
smaller model PB10. It uses JBL's exclusive digital amplifier, which is designed to operate in Class D mode and uses digital switching technology to provide its rated output and efficiency.
Its 300mm woofer cone is composed of a high purity pure cellulose fibre, which is said to be a lightweight and stiff material that has the fast response characteristics that assist in creating realistic and detailed low bass notes. The voice-coil magnet is vented for efficient heat dissipation, which in turn helps power handling capability and accurate response during extended periods of high volume operation.
The driver is mounted in a down-firing, ported, rigid, non-resonant enclosure, while the PB12 offers a full range of setup and adjustment controls including volume control, phase switch and adjustable crossover.
The LFE input bypasses the subwoofer's internal, user-adjustable low-pass crossover network, to avoid unnecessary reprocessing of the low-frequency effects channel of the digital soundtrack. The PB12 is also on good looking sub thanks to its smooth presentation fascia.
JBL has created a very clean-sounding sub here. It produces minimal false low end emphasis yet still manages to generate room-filling sound that's nicely detailed and well extended. Music and movies are no problem for this piece of gear and its versatile enough to place virtually anywhere.
Most impressive is the almost effortless delivery of low bass - from high energy explosions and car chases to subtle mood building information, the PB12 handles it all really well. Switch to stereo and then bung on the Tea Party or Vivaldi and you'll be pleasantly rewarded too.
