SuBsonic's new X series speakers use the same drivers and many of the design techniques as its more fancy Polymorphic range, but presents them to us in a more affordable package (which is good news for those of us wanting a great performing, value-added speaker range to choose from).
There are three main models in the range, backed up by two centre speakers and two rear models. You can also option-in the XS2 subwoofer. This system comprises the XM 2 front speakers, XC 2 centre speaker and XR 2 rear speakers. Each is magnetically shielded to prevent interference with television sets.
SuBsonic has included strong protection (from the 'nong') in all models by including a 'thermal polyswitch' which automatically reduces the signal level when something potentially damaging occurs and resets itself when danger has passed. All speakers are bi-wireable, have gold-plated connectors and use heavy duty internal wiring. Internally the cabinets are also thoroughly braced to minimise cabinet wall flexing (which can adversely affect the sound).
The XM 2 is bass reflex, floor standing designed that uses two 160mm woofers and a 25mm soft dome tweeter. Available vinyl finishes are black or mahogany and the front baffle has a high tech look to it.
Subsonic's 'Complex Field Dispersion' (CFD) in the XC2 centre speaker is said to create a sonic distribution pattern that's wider and higher than conventional centre channel speakers. This actually maximises the reach and quality of the system and to more people in the viewing room. It's a bass reflex design with two 127mm low range drivers and two 25mm tweeters.
The XR 2 rear surround speaker is compact with a multi-angle front panel and an overall design aims that allows convenient wall mounting. The design helps disperse more surround sounds into a larger area of the viewing room.
This system is an excellent example of Australian ingenuity. Its sound is clean, controlled and thoroughly palpable. There appears to be minimal distortion in the sound produced and the sonic results are equally impressive in both hi-fi (music) and home theatre. A versatile performer.
The really impressive aspect of the SuBsonic systems performances is the expansiveness of the surround it can produce without losing sonic perspective. When married to good electronics the alluring overall character - and truly exceptional balance across applications - of this system becomes even more impressive. A good looking system too.
