The 600 range of speakers was an outstanding success for B&W. There's now a series 2 version, using technology that has filtered down from the company's Nautilus project.
The Series 2 of the 600 design is said to offer improved dynamic bass performance, lower levels of colouration and greater imaging capacity. It's the least expensive of the stand-mount speakers in the range. The DM 601 S2 is a 2-way, 2-driver system installed in a vented box. It features a 165mm woven Kevlar mid/bass unit and 26mm aluminium dome tweeter.
The tweeter features a Nautilus tweeter tube to prevent interference from the low range driver activity, the tweeters' flat ring suspension aims to make diaphragm travel accurate and the Kevlar cone material offers an excellent low mass solution for bass and midrange sounds.
A surprisingly potent performer. It's a tad bass shy due to cabinet restrictions, but with a subwoofer in system (as it should be in home theatre systems) there's not a real problem. The speaker is fast and accurate yet still friendly and sonically appealing.
The technologies blend nicely together to create an excellent speaker for rear surround effects. Although the cabinet is finished in imitation wood grain it still presents a pretty picture. It works best when stand mounted as shelf mounting messes with the balance and imaging capacity a bit. The low colouration of the overall sonic character hints at a low resonance cabinet design.
The DM601 S2 has a great pedigree and slots in nicely as a rear speaker where it's exciting to listen to and enjoy to experience.
