This is a neat slim-line DVD player from the Sony range. In fact, the DVP-S336 is an entry-level products that proves good things can come in small packages.

The DVP-S336 features a number of Sony enhancement technologies that allow maximum picture potential from DVD discs. These include a precision drive mechanism, a dynamic focus optical laser and special Servo or correction system that adjusts for title (then the optimum angle of the laser top the disc surface is compromised). The result is better clarity and consistency in the images generated.

In terms of operation it's all pretty much steady sailing. There are the usual automatic features that make using the DVD medium such a pleasure and Sony has paid attention to getting elements of manual operation right, such as making the disc scan function smooth and controlled, and giving the slow motion facilities a few jitters as possible.

The unit can handle Dolby Digital, MPEG and DTS sound formats and has the added feature of a virtual surround sound system for use with televisions. There are other features that Sony uses to make setting up the DVP-S336 easy - for example its new graphic menu and the engraved labels on the top panel indicating the position of the connection terminals.

The Sony DVP-S336 produced a clean and clear video image. Nothing to complain about here. In operation the player was typically Sony, and that is efficient and reliable.

The scanning function and slow-mo operation features were remarkably smooth, particularly fast scanning. The sound potential also rated highly (DTS digital output is disabled by default and must be enabled through the set-up menu, which is isn't a hassle since the set-up menu seemed to be well presented and how often do you need the DTS function anyway?

The detailed control over digital audio output is excellent, but the DVP-S336 doesn't play CD-Rs.

Overall, a player with everything you'll need at an affordable price. Also, it's a great looking unit with a slim cabinet that's really décor-friendly and an impressive front panel should you want to pose. The remote was reasonably okay too.
