Even of you don't have a full home theatre system with the Panasonic DVD-RV20, you can still get better movie sound from DVDs simply by plugging an active subwoofer into the unit. The player sends a dedicated signal to the subwoofer containing those low bass sounds that give so many movies so much impact, and the active subwoofer creates those sounds for your enjoyment.
Okay, you may not get the full effect of home theatre, but at least it's a big step in the right direction and gives you the subwoofer option when your home theatre AV receiver doesn't have such a feature (of course the feature only works when 5.1 channel programme material is being played).

This feature is called a '2ch + bass' by Panasonic and is designed to work with your television sound system or a two-channel hi-fi set-up. Added to the virtual surround sound system of the player and you have an acceptable stop gap measure between stereo and home theatre sound.
The RV20 is sleek and silver with clean front panel lines, a minimum of controls to confuse you and a large well laid-out remote control. In fact, the latter is one of the easiest DVD player remotes I have used, even without some form of control illumination.
The audio and video processing and conversion used by this player is quite contemporary and at the front of technology for the class of player. It combines a number of useful features with 5.1 multi-channel surround output for Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG2.
The unit's dialogue enhancer appears to be a sonic shaper that emphasises mid tones to a certain degree so they have more prominent in the sound blend. I didn't find this feature all that beneficial because I prefer a flatter sonic response.
Panasonic has done some solid things with operation. There useful graphical assistance to operation and a good number of play options. Frame advance is reasonably smooth while high speed scanning is also well composed for the class of machine. If you use such things, chapter searching, title and segment marking are relatively simple to learn and use.
You'll appreciate the component video outlets. These make sure you get the maximum picture quality from the DVD player (after it has extracted it from the disc, of course) to feed to your viewing device (television or projector). Naturally you'll need component video inputs on the viewing end to.
It's difficult to find areas for complaint with this DVD player. It works quietly and efficiently, generates a good picture, has a variety of useful features and displays almost everything you do when operating it. Plus the remote is a real gem.
