DVD takeover bid?
Q. I'm confused. Is the new DVD Video system going to replace the video recorder I have now?
A. This is answered fully in our DVD feature elsewhere. Suffice it to say, in the short term, no! You see, you can't record on DVD at the moment (the time of writing) and even when you can record with the DVD format - the technology responsible for this medium is going to be very expensive indeed (at least initially).
The other factor is that there are millions of VHS video tapes out there in perfectly serviceable form (prerecorded movies and home tapes) and they will be feeding machines for a very long time.
Video recorders are machines with a high mechanical component so they will eventually wear out. When this happens purchasing DVD as an option will ain impetus.
In the meantime and probably of a long time (until recordable DVD is an affordable reality) we will predominantly see a tandem approach to owning and operating both technologies and using both tape and disc as sources.
