Recordable DVD
Q. What's the story with recordable DVD. When's it going to happen?
A. Actually it has been with us for some time, but not really on a mass consumer level. There appear to be three competing systems that could make it more accessible (affordable). These are DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW and DVD+RW. Each has the capacity to record up to 4.7GB capacity or around two hours of DVD quality recording.
DVD RAM is only compatible with DVD RAM products and not usable across other DVD drive solutions like players and PC units. DVD-R is a more cross podium compatible but relegated in the main to the computing storage area. It's also a record once system.
DVD+RW is apparently cross and backwards compatible and discs can re-recorded or re-written up to 1000 times on a single disc. Players can replay existing DVD mediums and the new recordable format. Hitachi is promoting its DVD-RAM video camcorder, while Pioneer is in the throes of introducing a DVD+RW PC drive. Meanwhile, Philips has a DVD+RW stand alone player in the wings.
