Remotely intelligent
Q. My learning remote stopped learning. Why?
A __ There are a number of operations you can perform to get the remote working before you need to resort to sending it to the service department. First, are the batteries in your remote new and are they powered? Insert them in another piece of equipment you know functions properly to test their charge. If they work in this equipment then there's a chance the remote is faulty. Next, does the transmit indicator flash when you press a button on the remote unit?
Make sure that the 'learn' switch is in the pre-programmed position. If the indicator does flash, but nothing happened when the button was pushed, there could be a problem in the receiver module within the stereo component itself, not thin the remote handset. If the indicator did not flash, its necessary to reset the device according to your instruction manual.
This can be done by using the point of a pen or finding a paper clip and opening it straight. Next, find the reset switch (your manual has the location of the switch) and gently insert the paper clip into the reset switch holding it for three seconds.
Remove the paper clip and press a button on the remote. If the indicator now flashes, normal operation has been restored. Why does this happen? Well, the computer chip in the handset needs minimum power (usually at least three volts) to work properly.
As batteries age their voltage drops (to below the minimum threshold) and locks up the computer chip. It stays locked up even though the batteries have been replaced with fresh ones. The reset procedure resets the computer chip and any programmed information will not be lost - unless your batteries have been dead for several days. If the reset procedure doesn't work and the remote is still inoperative it's time to go to a service centre.
