World Regions
Q. I know that in DVD medium terms Australia is Region 4 and that the US is Region 1, but what are the regions for other countries?
A. There are six regions in total, so let's go through the whole world as the Regions are sliced and apportioned. Region 1: The USA. Region 2: Europe, Japan, Middle East & South Africa. Region 3: South East Asia. Region 4: Australia, South America. Region 5: Africa, Russia, remainder of Asia. Region 6: China.
There's no sign yet that these demarcation lines will be eliminated, and many DVD aficionados have their machines hacked to play movies that have been encoded for different regions. This usually voids the warranty of the machine and is of questionable legality.
The point with Region 4 is that the format is PAL and intrinsically superior to the Region 1 format, for example, with enhanced image quality as a result. Where Region 1 DVD moves are often appealing beacuse they have enhanced special features and inclusions.
